Why do men wax?

Male hair removal, manscaping or male intimate waxing has seen a huge increase in popularity in the last few years. The most common reason for men waxing is for aesthetic reasons – particularly back and chest waxing.

Some men wax for sport. Cyclists wax their legs and arms to make cuts and grazes easier to clean. Male intimate waxing can be done for aesthetic reasons too, but many men report that it also feels very comfortable.

How do I prepare for my waxing?

Firstly, your hair needs to be an ideal length for waxing. It would need to be approximately about as long as a grain of rice, usually 4-6 weeks after your last waxing. If it’s not that long yet, wait for it to grow to at least that length before booking.

If you haven’t waxed before, and your body or pubic hair is longer than 1cm, it’s best if you slightly trim the hair yourself before your appointment as it will make the process quicker, easier and less painful.

For best results, it’s advisable to exfoliate the area you’re going to wax about prior to the waxing. By ‘exfoliate’ we mean use an exfoliating ‘scrub’ soap (available in most supermarkets and pharmacies) or an exfoliating cloth or sponge, which cleans up and removes any dead skin on the surface.

If you have any known skin allergies or conditions, we recommend doing a patch test at least 24 hours before the waxing.

How long does waxing take?

That all depends on what part of you is being waxed, and how thick your hair is. I can advise when booking how long I think it may take.

Can anyone get waxing?

If you take Roaccutane, you won’t be able to get waxed until 6 months after completing the medication. If you take steroid creams, Differin, Retin-A or any similar products, you can’t get waxed until 3 months after completing the treatment.

If you have sunburned skin, or recently broken or grazed skin, waxing should not be done until the condition has healed. The same goes for any contagious skin condition. Wait till it’s cleared up before waxing.

Does waxing hurt?

Let’s be honest, the real answer is yes, it does hurt a bit. But don’t worry – the materials and techniques used today, waxing is a whole lot less painful than it’s ever been. Normally, waxing gets less painful with each treatment.

Another important thing to note is that we use hot wax for the more sensitive parts. This wax is unique in that it wraps itself around the hairs, but without sticking to the skin. Not sticking to the skin, the only pain you feel is of the actual hairs being plucked.

Do I need to undress for waxing?

If you’re getting your chest or back waxed, you just need to remove your shirt. For leg waxing you remove your trousers but keep your underwear on.Obviously for intimate waxing, you would need to remove your underwear as well.

What if I get an erection?

This is much more common than you may think. It’s a natural reaction of the nervous system to being touched. It will subside and its definitely not something to be embarrassed about.

Can I make sexual suggestions or advances during my treatment?

No.
